Tonight! Community Forum for East Ramapo

Please join us for an important Community Forum for East Ramapo tonight from 7-9pm in the Arts Building. A student-led forum for all East Ramapo high-school students will take place alongside a separate facilitated conversation for adults. The event is open to all and we expect well over 100 students and many adults to be with us tonight for this important conversation.

For some context on the situation in our school district, listen to this piece from This American Life.

The Marshmallow Test

Are students losing their ability to self-regulate? Is "self-regulation" another word for obedience? What about the debate on willpower and that hard-to-define concept du jour, "grit"?  This piece on the “academic diligence task” raises complex questions.

Open Saturdays Tutoring Programs Gets RSF Grant

We are thrilled to announce that our Open Saturdays tutoring program has received a small seed fund grant from RSF Social Finance. The program, which ran from mid-January through early May of this year and will continue in 2014-15, serves students in Grades 7-12 in the struggling East Ramapo school district, in which Green Meadow is located.

We are so grateful to the students, teachers, parents, alumni parents, and friends who served as tutors, and we were proud to get to know the dedicated students who came to us each week to strengthen their academic work.

Here are some quotes from the students we served:

"Overall, this was a great experience and I would recommend it to anybody."

"My grades went up and my homework was completed more efficiently."

"I met new people and learned new things here."

"Thanks to the teachers and students who took time out to help me improve."

To volunteer your time next year, contact Diversity Committee Chair and Director of Communications and Marketing Vicki Larson.

Thank you to GMWS parent and Diversity Committee member Fernando Lopez-Diaz for these photos of our program.

GMWS Alumni Parent David Goodman in conversation with Dr. Maya Angelou

Don't miss this conversation from The Andrew Goodman Foundation's Hidden Heroes Awards 2013.

We are very proud that David Goodman and Sylvia Golbin-Goodman are involved alumni parents at GMWS. Did you know that the stage in Rose Hall is named for Andrew Goodman?
