How Waldorf Education Bridges the Oracy Gap Mainstream Schools Are Failing to Close

According to this recent Guardian article, the UK and other countries may be facing a true crisis of oracy education. Students increasingly lack confidence and skills to speak clearly, thoughtfully, and expressively, often failing to convey their thinking eloquently. However, Waldorf schools have long focused on developing students’ capacities for speech, articulation, debate, and conversation.

Waldorf schools around the world nurture speech thoughtfully, creatively, and successfully, in a way that allows children to find their voice and speak confidently –from early childhood to high school. The Waldorf approach to language development successfully addresses the development of speech and oracy, thus offering a roadmap to work through the difficulties cited in the article, and which have also become a concern for educators worldwide.

At Waldorf schools, literacy, creativity, self-expression, and effective communication are developed in all students, from early childhood on, through rich storytelling, artistic expression, and even singing. This way of immersing students in rich, complex, and creative explorations of literature and oral traditions helps develop skills not only related to language in the traditional sense but also fosters the development of empathy, cooperation, conversation, and critical thinking skills. The Waldorf approach to language offers a sharp contrast with mainstream schools, where speaking is just a means to an end, as opposed to an art in itself.

At Green Meadow, we prioritize the living spoken word as the foundation for higher language skills. Our students learn orally –listening to stories, reciting poems, singing, and participating in drama and theater. Teachers work on developing storytelling skills and share many stories with warmth and presence, ensuring that each word conveys deep meaning and that their stories can be recreated and reimagined in each student’s mind. Waldorf teachers understand the importance and true value of clear articulation, the use of complex and varied vocabulary, and of carefully expressing emotions. This results in true human engagement, outstanding imagination, and excellent memory. Waldorf graduates have a genuine love for language, are accomplished storytellers, and have the ability to communicate with confidence and effectiveness.

Waldorf schools’ approach to oracy and the spoken word is thoughtful, developmental, and builds on skills that are developed gradually and carefully. Formal reading and writing instructions are designed to begin only after the students have built a sound foundation in oral language. Thus, reading and writing are complementary skills to oral comprehension and speech, which have been intentionally developed for years by the time a student reaches first grade. Learning to read and write emerges as an extension of speaking and listening, which are essential skills for cooperation, social skill development, empathy, self-awareness, and confidence.

At Green Meadow, as in all Waldorf schools, we understand that speech is not only an academic endeavor but also the foundation for social and emotional development. Our curriculum is meaningful and engaging, as well as incrementally challenging. Storytelling, drama, poetry, and singing are not just forms of sharing speech; they are shared explorations that build community, foster collaboration, and promote creative expression. Our students thus gradually develop confidence and social skills that can only come from sustained practice in speech and language.

Understanding that speech and language are not just curricular topics is at the core of what makes Green Meadow a unique place for students to grow. For Waldorf educators, speech is central to human connection and human dignity. It allows for meaningful social interactions and for the development of strong collaborative communities, where young human beings can develop a sense of belonging and the freedom to become.
