Neil Perry Gordon:
In this rapidly advancing technological era, where artificial intelligence and digital learning
increasingly dominate our educational systems, maintaining a connection to the natural world
cannot be overstated. As humanity progresses, Green Meadow Waldorf School stands as a
beacon of hope, offering children an invaluable outdoor educational experience. Can you explain why this approach is so important?
Max Gordon:
There is no doubt that online learning will continue to grow. While such methods have their
place, especially for adults, their effectiveness for children is still debated. An emphasis on
outdoor education is vital. Green Meadow Waldorf School excels in this area because it has
many great teachers who provide a natural perspective. This approach encourages outside
learning, significantly enhancing the educational process across all subjects.
Neil Perry Gordon:
Outdoor education offers so many benefits. How do you think it impacts a child’s holistic
development?
Max Gordon:
Outdoor education is the most essential form of learning. When I visited the Shiviar tribe in
Eastern Ecuador, I was told how they initially welcomed missionaries to teach Christianity and
basic writing and reading skills. However, the tribe eventually sent the missionaries away
because they believed authentic learning was already occurring through their connection to
nature. The tribe emphasized nature literacy, which I define as an advanced understanding of the natural world. For instance, while many people can recognize the roadside sign of a McDonald’s, few can identify the leaves of dwarf ginseng. The Shiviar people value their ancestral ways of learning, which have come full circle to become a crucial part of their education. This approach encourages a deep, holistic connection to the environment, fostering a well-rounded development in children.
Neil Perry Gordon:
Can you speak to the physical benefits of outdoor education?
Max Gordon:
When I work with students outdoors, I encourage them to be highly physical, allowing a level of
risk that might not be acceptable in traditional school settings. This could include wrestling,
striking with spears, throwing tree branches, climbing, sitting on the ground, and eating wild
edible plants and mushrooms.
When I worked as the games and sports teacher at the Waldorf School of Palm Beach in Boca
Raton, Florida, I began understanding some of the intricacies of child development and physical
growth. Overall, the experience reaffirmed what I always believed: getting kids outdoors and
engaging them in complex physical activities helps develop their muscles and bones.
Archaeological research supports that the more complicated and genuine activities kids engage in early on, the more their bodies will grow into robust physiques, enhancing their physical activity in adulthood.
Neil Perry Gordon:
What about the social and emotional aspects? How does nature help in these areas?
Max Gordon:
I’m still exploring this, but Green Meadow does an excellent job in this regard because they have built a strong community. There’s a concept called Dunbar’s number, which suggests that
humans can maintain about 150 meaningful relationships. With the population of Green Meadow being around 300, students can form connections with their peers and older community members. Green Meadow and the surrounding Threefold community have a wealth of elders who offer unique perspectives and support the emotional and social growth of the children.
Neil Perry Gordon:
As artificial intelligence and digital technologies reshape our educational landscapes, losing
touch with the natural world is risky. How can we address this issue?
Max Gordon:
Losing touch with the natural world is indeed risky. Addressing or mitigating this loss is a great
question. While I can’t say I have all the answers, what we’re doing seems to be helping. Many
communities inspire me by preserving their language, food culture, plant knowledge, and health,
which helps prepare people for a world of changing technology. One of my indigenous teachers
from SUNY ESF once said that if our ancestors had guns for hunting, they would’ve used them.
This perspective reminds us that adapting to new technologies is essential, but we must also
retain our connection to nature.
Neil Perry Gordon:
Why do you believe the future of humanity depends on maintaining this connection to nature?
Max Gordon:
We have a planet that is habitable to humanity, where we evolved for hundreds of thousands of
years. We owe our allegiance to protecting it from exploitation and pollution. Maintaining this
connection to nature is essential for our survival and well-being.
Neil Perry Gordon:
Green Meadow Waldorf School is a model for this education. Can you tell us more about their
approach?
Max Gordon:
Certainly. Green Meadow Waldorf School follows Rudolf Steiner’s pedagogical principles,
clearly defining the curriculum for lower grades, middle school, and high school. They do an
excellent job guiding children from grades one through twelve, creating a positive educational
experience. As an educator and business owner, I find their approach inspiring and appreciate
their remarkable impact on their students.
Neil Perry Gordon:
What role does outdoor education play as we move into a digital future?
Max Gordon:
I believe digital education can significantly enhance outdoor education. For example, kids can
learn about plants, birds, animal tracks, and weather patterns digitally and then experience and
understand them firsthand in nature. My goal as a teacher is to prepare my students to be the best versions of themselves by integrating digital knowledge with real-world experiences. The
principles of nature and outdoor learning align with teaching communities, and I plan to explore
and expand on this integration throughout my career.
Neil Perry Gordon:
Besides being my son, can you briefly describe your education and professional career?
Max Gordon:
As the founder of the LionMan School of ReWilding (LMSR), I have seen firsthand how outdoor
education can transform lives. Since 2018, LMSR has taught survival skills to hundreds of
students nationwide, helping them reconnect with nature and develop essential life skills.
Before starting LMSR, I earned a Bachelor of Science in Indigenous Peoples from the State
University of New York, School of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY-ESF). My
journey in outdoor education continued with an apprenticeship at the Maine Primitive Skills
School, where I honed my skills and deepened my understanding of wilderness survival.
In 2024, I completed my Waldorf Elementary Teacher Education degree from Sunbridge
Institute. This fall, I look forward to starting a Master’s in Experimental Archaeology at the
University College Dublin, furthering my commitment to blending traditional knowledge with
modern education.
Outdoor education plays a crucial role in our increasingly digital world. Digital tools can
complement outdoor learning by teaching kids about plants, birds, animal tracks, and weather
patterns. However, the real value comes when they experience these lessons firsthand in nature.
As an educator, I aim to prepare my students to be the best versions of themselves by integrating digital knowledge with real-world experiences.
