by Dr. Harlan Gilbert
At Green Meadow Waldorf School, learning is alive, experiential, and connected to the world around us. In their Mapping the World block, the tenth-grade students stepped beyond the classroom, traveling to Cape Cod to learn and practice surveying and cartography.
Students first learned the basics of surveying: establishing reference points, measuring angles and distances with a transit, and accurately recording data. Each group then began to translate their measurements into accurate scaled maps, often discovering discrepancies that led them back into the field to check their work. Finally, each group combined its local maps with others, mapping adjoining areas, until each had a complete and aesthetic map of the whole region. In parallel, the students learned circular trigonometry, which provided important supports for their field work.
When the students returned to Green Meadow, they were challenged to map the entire planet, rather than a single region. But how can the curved surface of the Earth be projected onto a flat map without distortion? They concluded that it cannot: any flat map entails compromises and embodies priorities and biases: Every choice of projection tells a story about how people see and understand the Earth.
Each student then researched and gave a presentation on one map, such as the Mercator, Butterfly, and Authograph projections, and drew a second projection by creating the reticule and projecting the globe onto this by hand. The aim of these projects is to help tenth-graders develop a sense for the strengths and limitations of objectivity through experiences that spark curiosity, deepen understanding, and build real-world skills. The Mapping the World block teaches more than geography. It cultivates observation, critical thinking, and problem-solving. It invites students to ask meaningful questions such as how we represent truth, how we make sense of complexity, and how our individual perspectives can contribute to a shared understanding of the world.
